It is a mythical place in music history:
It is small, hot, dark, and crowded. The tinkling sound of glasses
and the thick smoke of countless cigarettes fill the air. Tension
is omnipresent.
Then, the lights go down. The crowd silences. Musicians step into
the spotlight. Someone on the stage counts out the first four measures...
The club can be both stepping-stone and dead end street for careers.
It is the place where musicians use electrically amplified instruments
for the first time. Finally, they can make themselves heard in
any room, in the last row, yes, even out in the street. Every note,
every emotion reaches the audience.
The pioneers are jazz and blues musicians: Charlie Christian,
T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters, and many more. And. they are all black.
